History of Belalcázar

Foundation & Name

Founded on November 29, 1888 by Bartolomé Chaves and Pedro Orozco . Originally called "La Soledad", then "Bello Alcázar", it was later named after the Spanish conquistador Sebastián de Belalcázar . It became a municipality in 1911 .

Coffee Region Heart

Belalcázar is a key part of the UNESCO Coffee Cultural Landscape. Its history is intertwined with the Antioquian colonization, reflected in its traditional architecture and farming traditions .

Cristo Rey Monument

The tallest religious monument in Colombia open to the public? At 45.5 meters (37m statue + base), it's even taller than Rio's Christ . Built in 1954 as a symbol of peace . Climb the 154 steps inside for a 360° view of 5 departments (Caldas, Risaralda, Valle, Chocó, Antioquia) . You can even peek through the eyes!

Inmaculada Concepción Church
